YOUR QUESTION

Should a believer who backslides from Christ, confess Him as Lord and Saviour the second time if he or she wishes to be saved

The backslider had fallen from grace, whatever the cause. The Bible does not give any room for a centre-course position because God is not partial; He is just. This is why the dogma of “purgatory” held by some Christian denominations is very misleading.  Someone either dies in Christ’s righteousness (2 Corinthians 5: 21; 1 Thess. 4: 13 – 14; Psalm 116: 15) or dies an unrepentant sinner. (Romans 6: 23). A backslider only tasted the grace of God and went back to his vomit

  • The punishment for a backslider who died without repentance again from Christ is much heavier and swift than someone who never was a believer in Christ and died as well; though both of them end up in hell.
  • Heaven is achieved only by God’s mercy and grace through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, with unflinching faith. One intentional act of sin registers spiritual backsliding.

The following scriptures testify that backsliders needed to completely and sincerely repent and confess Jesus Christ again as Lord and Saviour into their hearts and lives before they could be restored. Please study these quotes very well to see if you are in agreement.

Hebrews 6: 4 – 8
Hebrews 10: 26 – 31
2 Peter 2: 20 – 22
1 Corinthians 9: 25 – 27
Matthew 24: 13
Luke 13: 24
Matthew 7: 13 – 14
Revelation 3: 15.
